To Schitso above: That disables anti-aliasing etc. by the card leading to pixelated/jagged edges . A better is to start video playback, pause it, open the nvidia control center and click the ‘Reset Hardware Defaults’ button in the ‘XServer XVideo Settings’ tab.

Actually for totem you can set its xv contrast value through the gconf-editor at

/apps/totem --> contrast

For my laptop, I set its value to 16400 (for about half of the default value)

It will be set the contrast just like using the "xvattr -a XV_CONTRAST -v 64" command.
